Now I am back from Iceland and I like to show you some impressions I ve collected there.

Early this year we found a cheap return flight with Germanwings to Keflavik KEF, our plan was to spend 3 whole days on that island.

After the bank crash in 2008 the prices on Iceland went down, a dream for us. So we decided to make a domestic flight. There were no really special fares on any route for our dates when we checked the Air Iceland homepage. But every week they have an offer and so we saw a special fare to Akureyri AEY for around 24000 ISK for 2 people return .

The price that Google shows is not right (around 100 EUR for 23990 ISK). First we thought that it was the right price so we booked this trip for Sunday 13th June . Later we saw a route to Grimsey with a Twin Otter, so we booked this one as well for Friday 11th June.

Later I spend a look on my credit card account and saw that the flight to AEY was more expensive as we expected around 155EUR. Gallows humor was the best medicine for that experience.

We booked the Hotel Cabin in Reykjavik for 3 nights with breakfast.

Before I start to tell any story about Iceland I like to go to the past… the first Singapore Airlines A380 flight to Sydney. When I have read Sam Chui’s trip report about this flight I saw a picture of his logbook.

I found this idea that good that I decided to make such a logbook as well. Since 2008 I have collected 160 logs of my 215 flights.

So here I like to show you these logs. And I have a GPS logger with me on every flight.

You can open that *.kml file with Google Earth to see the route. http://ul.to/ss39or

As you can see our flight to KEF was more or less on time and Stefan was able to contact two local spotters from Reykjavik.

When we arrived they were already waiting at the airport. Thanks again for your help and your time.

The day was already over but in Reykjavik was still some light, it looks like dawn from 0000l-0300l. A new experience for us.

The next day we stand up at 0800l, spend some time in the breakfast room and then at 0900l the two locals were waiting for us to go to Reykjavik RKV.

RKV is the local airport of Iceland’s capital. There are two major airlines first of all Flugfelag Island and as well Eagle Air Iceland and some private traffic.

At 1130l our flight was departing to Akureyri and later to Grimsey with Norlandair DHC6-300. After the departure of Air Icelands DH8-100 we deceided to check in, it was already 1100l. Still some time to wait. Here I should say that on domestic flights in Iceland are no security controls and as well you are allowed to take any bottles of liquid with you. Boarding was at 1125l and the flight or should I better say the landscape was amazing.

In Akureyri we had still some time left, but Our Twin Otter was already waiting there. TF-NLD.

We took a picture of the F50 we arrived some minutes before and then we walked back to the terminal.

Our flight to Grimsey was quite interesting, it was a VFR flight.

On Grimsey we had about 1,5h so we crossed the Northern polar circle, went to the city of Grimsey and sent a postcard home to Germany ( until today 19th June it did not arrive).

Wikipedia says that in 2003 103 people were living on that small island and these two guys had some fun with that shark.

Our flight back to Akureyri was a VFR flight as well and the altitude was around 500ft.

In Akureyri we were able to visit the museum with the Iceland coast guard F27, entrance fee is 5Eur… quite much. The Icelandair DC3 was in that museum as well.

There was no more time left and we walked back to the terminal for our return flight.

Don’t know where her final destination was. But she was resting until Sunday in RKV.

After our arrival our local friend were waiting in RKV to pick us up for a ride to the volcano whose name nobody can really pronounce – Eyjafjallajökull.

Quite interesting to see that “monster” in a distance of just 3km. And as well we collected some volcano ash as a souvenir.

When we were back on Reykjavik the day was already over. For the Saturday our plan was to take some pictures in KEF and we planned to meet us at 1300l. We walked to the city centre for quick sightseeing, but because of the rain we spend some time in a café with free Wifi for a tea.

One of the most famous buildings in Reykjavik.

The weather was not with us but the Air Greenland Dash8 was arriving and some Icelandair 757 as well. I received a message that a legacy should arrive soon OE-IAL was it I think… it was a normal ERJ with Andalus livery, but there was no possibility to take a picture of it.

Later we spend a quick look at RKV for these aircrafts, and the second of three days were already over.

On Sunday our last day we checked out early to take some more shots in RKV. Our flight to Akureyri was scheduled for 1330l. We have taken some more pictures until we arrived 25 prior departure at the terminal.

The flight deck crew was so friendly and invited me to the cockpit for a jump seat flight to Akureyri, they deceided to show me a new approach in AEY which was introduced not long ago. The angel of approach is 5°, normally it is 3°.

In Akureyri we walked a bit heading to the city for a Hot Dog at a gas station, on the way up there we have taken some pictures of our departing F50.

Back at the airport there was some time left and we had the chance to photograph “our” Twin Otter again heading to Grimsey, but today empty. It was really nice to see a nose down takeoff.

When our aircraft arrived from RKV for the flight back we saw the same crew leaving the aircraft and I gave Stefan the opportunity to fly on the jumpseat.

AEY-RKV13.jpg

Then we have taken some more shots in RKV before we left Iceland that evening from KEF.

We arrived in CGN quite early and there was no traffic jam on the 100km trip back to my hometown Bochum between Dortmund and Düsseldorf, and after arrival there I spend some time in my bed.

So if you have the opportunity to go to Iceland do it. Book a domestic flight as well and you ll get some nice experience. The unique landscape, geysers (we have not seen them because there was no time left to see them) or the ash monster are reasons to visit that country.
