Hello again

 

After posting some shots of a FiAF training exercise, I thought I'd post some shots from my home airport where I'm mostly doing my aviation photography.

 

The location is Oulu Airport, situated some 180km south of the Arctic Circle.

 

The airport is 2nd largest in Finland in terms of passengers but 3rd or 4th in terms of operations.

 

Most of the airport's traffic is Finnair Airbuses flying from and to Helsinki. October 2009.

We get the retrobus sometimes too. August 2009.

 

Blue1 is also a regular operator with it's Avro RJ's... October 2009.

 

...and MD90's. September 2009.

 

Most recently, Air Baltic has started operating flights to Turku, Riga and is about begin flights to Tallinn and Stockholm. First they used Fokker 50's to operate these flights. January 2008.

 

But more recently B737 have become the normal equipment. March 2010.

 

And sometimes they even send a B757. March 2010.

 

There's also significant amount of charters. Mainly during the winter months to some warmer locations.

But there are also other operators for charters...

Finnair also uses it's Helsinki-Oulu-Helsinki flights to train new crews for their heavy equipment so sometimes we get an A330 or A340 flying the normal service.

But there can be other reasons too. This A330 was operating a flight to Bangkok because Helsinki was closed due to the ash cloud. April 2010.

 

Sometimes, often way too very rarely, we get something more interesting... April 2006.

 

Civil operators are not the only users for the airport. Finnish Air Force uses Oulu for training exercises quite extensively.

Due to somewhat extreme(yes, I know there's still a lot of airport north of Oulu, but still) northern location, there are extreme changes in amount of light, temperatures etc. during the year.

 

There can be anything from light in the middle of night. Taken around 04:00(yes, in the morning). June 2009.

To extreme cold. November 2007.

 

To sunset in the early afternoon. February 2010.

Wow,

 

from the first picture to the last, every single one is amazing and special in its own way. Somehow I especially like the first one: The small farm and the seemingly endless woods in the background look like a piece of art!

 

Other highlights for me are....ah well, all of them basically! From the low sunlight to the winter wonderland to the sharp night shots, stunning!

 

And great skills on your part, too, with a good eye for the photo composition and a good sense for the right moment to go to the airport.

I'd love to see more (but I guess traffic might be the restricting issue here :)) !!

Hehe. Actually I'd like to do a trip to ZRH again. I was there for few days back in 2007. Really loved it, really good & easy access and nice locations.

 

I'm off to FRA(Air Baltic is cheap btw.), Speyer & Sinsheim museums next week...

All of them are stunners, the cream of the crop!
