Eight die in mystery helicopter crash Charles Bremner An Italian military helicopter crashed in eastern France yesterday, killing all eight people on board.

The Sikorsky HH3F, a coastguard search and rescue aircraft, came down in flames in the late afternoon in open country in the Meuse region between the towns of Lisles-en-Barrois and Vaube-court. It was flying with another aircraft from France to Belgium.

The second helicopter reached its destination, said Alexandra Petit, a spokeswoman for the region.

“There were eight people on board the aircraft and none survived,” she said. A crisis team had been set up.

There was no indication of what caused the crash, which happened in fine weather, she said. All aboard appeared to have died instantly in the crash and the explosion that followed.

The helicopter, which Italian newspapers said had taken off from Rimini, was taking part in a joint Franco-Italian exercise, said the Ministry of Defence in Rome. “It caught fire at 4.30pm local time in open countryside not far from Strasbourg. It was completely destroyed.

We still don’t know the causes,” an Italian military spokesman said. There was no immediate word on the identity of the crew and passengers.

Firefighters pulled the bodies from the wreckage after extinguishing the blaze in a ploughed field near L’Isle-en-Barrois, a small town in the rolling farmland of the Meuse. The remains were so badly burnt that rescuers were at first unable to determine the number of people on board.

Nearby residents said that they heard nothing unusual until the sound of the helicopter exploding, at least a kilometre from the nearest house. Accident investigators were on the scene within two hours of the crash.

The two helicopters were flying together on a training mission between military bases in Dijon and Florent-en-Argonne, in the Champagne region to the north when the accident occurred. There was no indication on whether they might have collided.

The French armed forces conduct intensive training – often with allied services - in the dense low-level military air corridors that run parallel to the French frontiers with Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium.

The Sikorsky HH3F, which goes by the name of Pelican, is a workhorse used by the US Coast Guard and the services of many other countries.

It is a rugged and reliable aircraft that dates back to the Sikorsky HH3E, which was affectionately called the “Jolly Green Giant” when it performed rescue and transport missions for the US forces during the Vietnam War in the 1960s.

With its dangerous mission of plucking people from water and mountains and other hostile terrain, the HH3E has suffered numerous peacetime incidents and crashes. In one of the worst all six on board were killed in Alaska in 1986.
