März 2004 SKI PLANE IN DRAMA AT TAKE-OFF Mar 5 2004 By Patrick Mulchrone A PILOT narrowly avoided disaster when another jet cut across his path as he was about to take off. His plane, packed with 200 skiers, was thundering down the runway at 115mph when a landing Ryanair flight taxied at high speed in front of him. Tyres screeched and smoke poured from the brakes. Witness Keith Doherty said: "To avoid collision they needed not just an abort but an emergency stop with smoking brakes - the works!" The MyTravel Airbus bound for Toulouse stopped yards from where the other jet crossed its path. The pilot went back to the terminal at Manchester to have the tyres and brakes checked. The flight was delayed. No one was hurt in the near miss with the Ryanair flight from Dublin on Sunday. The Air Accident Investigation Board is looking into it and has said that the MyTravel pilot was not to blame. Ryanair said its flight had been given the okay by air traffic controllers.
