Breaking off

What mean "... breaking off downwind ..." ?

Who can use this expression ? IFR-flights or VFR too ?

Hi Johnny!

 

In Lugano this will be used for example when the wind is coming from the south and planes cannot land directly on runway 01. So they will fly the IGS01 approach until being in visual conditions. At some point before the runway (maybe 4 or 5 NM, depending on the weather. The MDA in Lugano is between 2300 and 3850 feet) the pilots will stop the approach on the IGS 01 and make a right turn to join the downwind leg for runway 19. This is called "breaking off for downwind". I hope I could help you.

It's exactly what I asked ! I hear often this statement when I'm flying at LSZA, but I didn't knew it !

it is indeed I right turn initially. Afterwards it will be a left-hand procedure, but to start that it needs of course a right turn :)
