NOTAM Ausfall (FAA) 11.01.23 USA

Ein Fehler in einem File (Quelle AP, evtl. ungenau) führte zum Totalausfall sämtlicher Inlandflüge am letzten Mittwoch 11.01.2023.

Fast 1000 Flüge gecancelt und etwa 5000 Andere delayed führten zu einem Chaos 'everywhere".

 

Grund sei laut Presse ein Fehler in einem File des NOTAM Systems, welches durch die FAA betrieben und gefüttert wird.

After hours of disruptions, the FAA announced that air traffic operations were resuming normally— around 09:00 ET — and that the disruption was due to a “damaged database file” and there was no evidence of a cyberattack.

Obwohl das Problem nach einigen Stunden behoben wurde, normalisierte sich die Lage sehr langsam, und noch am Folgetag gab es grosse Verstätungen und Massen von gestrandeten Kunden.

Die Piloten und Gesellschaften fluchten öffentlich und unter sich, jedermann findet das aktuelle System obsolet , völlig überlastet und nicht mehr zeitgemäss.

 

Die Encoding Rhules der NOTAMS mögen archaisch sein, und die übermittelten Meldungen manchmal weit weg von den wirklichen Bedürfnissen der "Airmen". Aber das System wurde per Beschluss nach Ende des WWII eingeführt und hat wirklich funktioniert.

 

In den 75 Jahren seit dem Beginn hatte es noch nie einen solchen Ausfall gegeben, wo ein ganzer Staat unabsichtlich betroffen war,

 

Zudem liegt es ja nicht am NOTAM, wenn die nationale Autorität mit IT-Technik aus den 50-er Jahren ein solches essentielles System betreibt. Und dies im Land der "Inventions", gerade in der ICT (relationale Datenbanken,  Server Mirroring, dann Virtuelle Discsysteme, dann virtuelle HW, dann deploy automatismen wie Docker u.a., dann Cloud Technologie..*)

 

My 5ct:

Vielleicht ist es an der Zeit, ein solcher umfassender Standard und essentieller Informationsprozess global neu zu organisieren, und nicht mehr am Rockzipfel des Kriegsgewinner des 2. WK anzuhängen. Eine Analogie: aktuell läuft ja der langsame Loslösungsprozess vom Bit Brother USA betr. Internet Base Rhules. Die wirklich grossen Usergruppen (Asien allen voran) wollen ein Wörtchen mitbestimmen und preschen voran. Insider befürchten eine IT Welt mit mehreren Internet's- um es salopp zu sagen. Für manche Beobachter ist die Zeit der Lösungsfindung schon vorbei.

Anyway, I could go on for hours. Bottom line, FAA needs a whole lot more funding than we get to do our job. Oh, and one more thing, blancolirio and Juan Brown are the best on Youtube. Period. I have a long background in accident investigation but still come here after a high profile incident.
